Seabreeze Bar and Restaurant Winter League
Sunday brought the first 18 holes of the 36-hole final but unfortunately also brought the most brutal conditions experienced in this season’s league. Strong winds, stomach bitter cold and a punishing mix of rain, information pills sleet and hail showers had most competitors wishing they were somewhere else. However there was no avoiding the elements and so 40 brave pairings took to the links. Leaders after round one were the father and son pairing of Declan and Mark Rooney on a score of 8 up v-par. In the circumstances this was a truly fantastic score leaving them 2 clear of three pairings on 6 up, Conlon/Conlon, Kilbride/Kilbride and Gannon/Cunningham. Pat Lee and Fergal Derrig stand alone on 5 up, with Jimmy Glynn and John White on 4 up and Michaels Keane and Kivlehan on 3 up.  While this year’s winnners will surely emerge from this group there are  fourteen more pairs who managed to avoid negative figures and can realistically entertain hopes of crashing the top ten and taking a prize. The order of play for next Sunday with current scores is as follows,
8.10 McGrath/Farrell(-9) & Higgins/Corcoran(-7)
8.20 Walsh/Filan(-7) & Galvin/Galvin(-6)
8.30 Leggett/Durkin (-5) & Ruane/English(-5)
8.40 McCann/Henry (-4) & Leonard/Kerins(-3)
8.50 Carr/Mannion(-3) & Probst/Cadden(-3)
9.00 Gerrity/Gerrity(-3) & Cox/Heffernan(-2)
9.10 Dykes/McCaffrey(-2) & Monaghan/McManus(-2)
9.20 Nicholson/O’Rourke(-2) & Campion/Murphy(-2)
9.30 Tivnan/Fox(-2) & Kane/Roughan(0)
9.40 Coyne/Howley(0) & Fox/Fox(0)
9.50 Mullins/O’Mahoney(0) & Maxwell/Muir(0)
10.00 Scanlon/Conlon(+1) & Timbs/Moriarty(+1)
10.10 Gray/Keaney(+1) & Watters/Lindsay(+1)
10.20 Wehrly/Fox(+1) & Halloran/Stewart(+1)
10.30 Martin/McMorrow(+2) & McNally/Martyn(+2)
10.40 Doherty/Higgins(+2) & Keane/Kivlehan(+3)
10.50 Glynn/White(+4) & Lee/Derrig(+5)
11.00 Gannon/Cunningham(+6) & Kilbride/Kilbride(+6)
11.10 Conlon/Conlon(+6) & Rooney/Rooney(+8)

The non-qualifiers will conclude on the back nine with an 8.10 start (timesheet in golfshop) with the lead currently being shared by two father/son teams, the Phelans and the Basquilles.

Congrats to club stalwart Pat Togher who aced the second hole for the first reported competitive hole-in-one of 2011. This occurred in regular Saturday competition with witnesses stating that the ball started for the 18th tee before Pat’s legendary ‘Maugherow Hook’ kicked in and brought the ball back to the second green and ultimately to the bottom of the cup….exactly as Pat intended!
