The Annual General Meeting of Strandhill Golf Club Ltd will take place in the clubhouse on Friday 28th Feb at 8.00pm. All members are requested to attend.

After all the excitment of the winter league last week the gents this week are taking a back seat as the ladies final took centre stage this weekend. The poor weather hasn’t helped matters either with Friday’s Open a wash out and the weekend was a quiet affair too with all the rain. A few souls went out and battled the conditions. On Saturday, Stephen English continued his great form of late and won the 12 hole competition with 29pts which included four birdies. On Sunday only a few ventured out and best of the bunch was Ronnie Henneberry who won on a BOT from Pat Hickey with both men having 33pts.

Strandhill Lodge & Suites Winter League Final
The final day of the prestigious Strandhill Lodge & Suites Winter League took place on Sunday. A shot of morning frost overnight delayed the start by 20 mins but as play got underway, the favourites were beginning to assemble and the clubhouse was a buzz with anticipation. The bookies however were looking forlorn as they tried to persuade punters to part with some cash but were having a hard time of it and with the leaders heavily backed from last week, they were about to get hammered. Conditions were not as tough as last week, which gave some hope to the chasers and as the day progressed some fantastic scores were being put together. The B final was a nine hole affair and Brian Henry and Kieran Egan were in sparkling form finishing 6up from Michael and Paul Cox who were 4up and Fergal Lynch and Ronan McCabe who finished third with 2up.

At this stage the leaders started to hit home and the scores coming in from the course were staggering. Ronnie Conlon and Peter McDonnell had hoped for a little better but finished with 6up today and 12up overall. David Lyndsay and Donal Barry started the day 6up and were having a great tussle with playing partners Stephen English and Jimmy Kiernan. After a great front nine they faded a bit on the latter holes and had to settle for a finishing score of 13up. Seamus and Robbie Henneberry started the day well down the field and felt no pressure whatsoever. With only their pride to play for, they blasted their way around and finished with a fantastic 10up on the day and a 13up aggregate to finish in third place. Another pair in sparkling form Stephen English and Jimmy Kiernan were also blasting their way around the course and only for too many shots dropped last week, they may have given the leaders a run for their money. 11up on the day catapulted them into second spot leaving Noel Tivnan and Gerry Kilbride a target of 16up to beat.
The two boys had their destiny in their own hands and calmly went about the business of finishing off the job from last week. They were 7up after nine holes but went off the boil a bit on the early holes on the back nine but rallied thereafter. Not knowing the leading score in the clubhouse, the boys walked off the 17th 18up and a magnificent 7 iron to 12 feet gave Tivvy the opportunity to savour the moment. The large crowd watched on as he set the ball in motion and it finished off stone dead. Another win and a finishing score of 19up. We never had a chance really. Many congratulations to Noel and Gerry and it was fitting that Gerry’s parents were with him in the clubhouse later in the evening to see him collect his prize. Gerry tells me he won the winter league three times with his dad. Captain Jim Branley welcomed Seamus back to the clubhouse after many years. Gerry was left to give the winning speech and was as eloquent as ever, thanking the committee and all those who ran such a successful winter league. We are also delighted to be able to announce that Strandhill Lodge & Suites have agreed to sponsor the winter league once again next year. David McCoy, General Manager kindly gave us the news and we thank them for continuing their fantastic sponsorship of this prestigious competition. So once again we congratulate the winners Noel Tivnan and Gerry Kilbride on a fantastic score today and becoming Strandhill Lodge & Suites winter league champions 2013/2014.

Strandhill Lodge & Suites Winter League Final

The first day of the finals took place on Sunday. Everyone got a mixed bag of weather so nobody gained any advantage. The scoring overall was quite close as you would imagine considering only 1 pairing were below level par for the course. As seems to be the usual story, the favourites are to the fore and leading the way are Noel Tivnan and Gerry Kilbride who finished 8up. They got off to a slow start halving the first two and losing the third only to get it back straight away at the next. Wins at 6, 7 and 15 got them to the turn 3up. A half at the next was followed by 5 wins on the trot which included 2 birdies. They lost the 16th but noel won the 17th and a half at the last gives them a two shot lead with 8up. Hot on their heels however is another of the favourite groups, Ronnie Conlon and Peter McDonnell. Ronnie had the distinction of having eagles at the 1st and the 5th. They are in a group of three on 6 up followed by 3 more on 5up. Anyone from 4 or 5 shots behind are still in with a chance to win so next weeks final day should be exciting to say the least. The Non Qualifiers is being lead by B.Henry and K.Egan on 4up and they are being chased by 5 pairs on 2up. The full results are on the facebook page and on the website. Click the links for full results.

Photo: Strandhill Golf Club Marketing Committee in Belfast<br />Once again the club was among 35 golf clubs represented, this time in Belfast at the Bord Failte golf club trade show. This is an opportunity for clubs to showcase themselves for visitors and golf societies. Carmel Clarke and John Howley were there on behalf of the club and got a great reaction especially for our new play & stay offer with Strandhill Lodge & Suites. What also has become apparent is that while the golf club is being promoted, the village as a whole is also a factor for people to come and visit. We have fantastic accomadation, bars, cafes and award winning restaurants on our doorstep. The club is making great strides to market itself so that our future is a little bit better. Our thanks go to Carmel and John for their efforts.

02/02/14

The poor weather all week cancelled all the competitions once again and it wasn’t until Sunday that members managed to get out onto the fairways. As it turned out, glorious sunshine greeted the gents for a 14 hole competition early in the morning accompanied by a stiff cold wind. After all the rain over the last few weeks, the course has maintained its fantastic condition and the greens are as good as you will get anywhere in the country. Our thanks and gratitude go to the greenkeepers yet again. The competition was a close affair with 5 or six players shooting 28 pts. Con Hegarty took the honours from Jim Owens, both with 30pts on a break of tie, crucially birdying the last hole.

Prize Presentation
On Friday night we had the final presentation of outstanding prizes from 2013. Many thanks once again to our sponsors who provided fantastic prizes for all our competitions. A special word of thanks to The Embassy Bar who were presenting prizes for the 30th year in a row. We hope they and all our other sponsors continue to support us in the next 30 years. See our facebook page for photos of the night.
