Gents News

We’ve had another busy week here in Strandhill with the help of the fantastic weather. The course is in magnificent shape and visitors especially, sales are heaping praise on the club. We thank the greens staff for their tremendous efforts over the last few weeks. With the course in such fantastic condition, abortion the scoring is fantastic too. Friday’s Open as ever was well supported and Sean McMorrow was the best of the bunch with 41pts followed by Ray O’Donnell with 39pts. Saturdays competition sponsored by The Sligo Golf Academy was won by Johnny Martyn with a fantastic 62. On any other day you would mention the runner up and thats about it, story however this weekend was a bit special for one man who is playing the golf of his life at the moment. Only last week, Dessie Timbs managed to go round the course in 1 under and get to a handicap of 2. This week he went better again and went round in 4 under with birdies at the 5th,10th, 15th and 16th and no dropped shots. And just for good measure, himself and David Lindsay went out on Sunday and won the competition with a 63. I spoke to Dessie on Sunday and he is loving every minute of his golf right now. And why not. This latest score has his handicap at 1.8. We look forward to him making it to 1 and beyond. Well played Dessie and David on Sunday. Runners up were Stephen English and Jim Glynn with a 63.

Gents News
While Bubba Watson was winning his 2nd green jacket this weekend, Strandhill members were enjoying tougher conditions on the links with a cool stiff breeze blowing across the links. Still we are a hardy lot and enjoy it we did. Friday’s open was a tight affair but John McHugh came up trumps with a great 40pts to beat Jimmy Noone and Colm Rochford who both had 39pts. On Saturday it was a different case altogether with Pat Thornton winning the Voya Seaweed Baths competition with a fantastic 40pts and a 5pt winning margin from Paul Cox and Alec Hamill. The Venue Bar & Restaurant were the kind sponsors of Sunday’s competition and once again the scoring was excellent. Leo McNally lead the way with a fine 41pts which included birdies at the 7th and the 10th. Noel McHale pipped Martin Gillen by a point to take 2nd with 39pts.

Gents News
The decent weather at the weekend brought out members and visitors alike and Fridays Open had a welcome return to good numbers enjoying the links. The scoring was very good and best of the day went to Dave Moriarty who beat Padraic Scanlon on a BOT with both players tied on 41pts. Padraic had a great score going but dropped a heap of shots over the last 5 holes.
Saturdays competition was kindly sponsored by Colm Martyn Landscapes and a big crowd enjoyed some pleasant sunshine for parts of the round. Eddie Rushe must have rested the bad leg over the last few weeks as it didn’t give him any problems as he romped home with a fantastic 42pts from Gerard Fitzpatrick on 40pts. Michael McDermott was third with 38pts.
Sundays Cup Qualifiers was a different ball game altogether with the early starters having to contend with a stiff breeze and some very heavy showers. David Hannigan played in the worst of the weather but he managed a fantastic round of 69 to win by three shots from Colin Foran (72) and Joe Hanney (73).
