First Tee at Strandhill Golf Club

It was a busy week in Strandhill Golf club this week as the Connacht Sheild team kicked off the week by advancing to the semi-finals with a victory over Carrick-On-Shannon. The two matches that were to be played in Carrick-On-Shannon were postponed due to bad weather but victory in the three matches that were played at Strandhill made rescheduling the two away matches unnecessary. The semi-final will be played this coming Monday, approved September 8th against Tubbercurry Golf Club. Tubbercurry will host three of the matches while the other two will be played at Strandhill so be sure to come along to either venue to show your support.

Thursday saw the contesting of the Swagman Bar sponsored O’Hara Cup 18 Hole Stableford and it proved to be a tightly fought affair with Marie Rooney of Co. Sligo Golf Club coming out the eventual winner with a score of 37 points. Gillian Ballantyne took second spot with a score of 35 points, just ahead of Lady Captain, Ann Cox, who carried her good form from last weeks win to help her take third place with a score of 34 points.

This weeks Friday Open saw some exceptional scores being returned. James Kearins carded a fantastic score of 47 points to finish the clear winner in a round which included no less than 7 pars and a birdie on the par 4, 8th hole. Second and third places could only be seperated by virtue of a count back with Tony Scappaticci from Mountbellew finishing second ahead of Michael O’Hara of Castle Dargan in third place. Both men carded scores of 41 points each which on any other day, would be good enough to be in with a chance of securing first place.

Saturday’s Summerville Nursing Home sponsored 18 Hole Stableford competition saw single figure handicapper, Paul Cox come out on top with a score of 39 points in a round which included 3 birdies and an eagle in the first 5 holes. Joe Tuffy took second spot with a score of 37 points, finishing just ahead of Anthony Skeffington, who was one point back on 36 points.

Sunday’s 18 Hole Ladies Stableford Open competition sponsored by Shoot the Crows Bar followed the trend of Thurday’s competition by being yet another tightly contested battle. Fiona Moylan from Stackstown G.C. secured top spot with consistent scoring to come away with 39 points. Mary Corcoran finished a point back in second place with a score of 38 points while Ann Cox took her second, third place finish of the week with a score of 36 points.

Sunday’s Men’s 18 Hole Stableford competition sponsored by The Glass House Hotel saw a very tight field with 1st and 15th place only seperated by 4 points. The competition was won by Martin O’Hara, who shot a very respectable level par front nine in a round that was good enough to end on a score of 40 points. Martin bogeyed the fourth hole but bounced back immediately with a birdie on the par 5, 5th. There was nothing to seperate second and third places with both Francis O’Beirne and Ciaran Fox returning scores of 39 points. Francis took second place by virtue of a better back 6 holes with Ciaran finishing in third.

On Sunday 14th September 2014, Strandhill Golf Club will host a special fundraiser for our Jimmy Bruen team as they seek the elusive All Ireland Pennant at Cartron House in the National Finals. Its €100 per team of 4 with a maximum of 30 teams. There will be a shotgun start at 11.30 am with 2 scores to count on each hole. Food will also be provided afterwards in the clubhouse. 1st Prize is B&B for 4 at City West Hotel Dublin, with lots of other prizes. As the team continues its preparation, members and friends can enjoy the golf and show their appreciation . The 3rd Green

Strong winds were in evidence for the majority of competitions held at Strandhill Golf Club over the course of the last week but this didn’t stop some excellent scores being returned. Thursday’s Abbott Ireland sponsored 18 Hole Stableford saw some very close scoring with only one point separating the top 3 players. Lady Captain, visit this site Ann Cox and Therese Cosgrove both returned scores of 35pts each with Ann taking top slot by virtue of a better back nine. Caroline Peacock carded a score of 34 points to take third place.

This weeks Friday Open competition told a similar story to the Ladies competition with the top 3 again, ask only separated by a single point. John Morgan from Ballinamore and John McCallion from Co. Sligo both returned scores of 39 points each with John Morgan winning on the back nine. Peter McDonnell carried on his fine form from the Jimmy Bruen Finals to return a score of 38pts which seen him take third spot.

Saturday’s competition was Keane’s Filling Station sponsored 18 Hole Stableford and again this was another tight affair. Don Conlon took first place with 38 points followed closely by Eamon Howley with a score of 37 points. Diarmuid Finan added to his win in last Sunday’s competition by rounding out the top 3 positions with a score of 35 points.

The ladies competition on Sunday was the Aisling Hair & Beauty sponsored 18 Hole Stroke. In spite of strong winds making conditions difficult, case some good scores were returned. Marianna Little clinched the win with a fantastic score of 69, two strokes ahead of Lorna Hill who shot a 71. Kathleen Kelpie finished third with a round of 73. Lorna Hill also carded the lowest gross score of 85, three stroke ahead of her nearest challenger.

The mens  18 Hole Stableford competition was sponsored by Car Valeting Ballast Quay and turned out to be a very close affair with only one point separating the top 3 positions. Colin Foran put in an excellent performance to post a score of 40 points which was only just enough to see him take first place. Noel McHale finished a close second with 39 points while Derek Gray, also scoring 39 points but losing out on the back nine, taking third spot.

Strandhill Golf Club Jimmy Bruen Connacht Champions 2014

On September 14th 2014 Strandhill Golf Club will play host to a very special fundraiser for our Jimmy Bruen All Ireland Finalists. It is open to teams of four, dosage any combination. There is a maximum of thirty teams. There will be bar bites included in the club house after for participating teams. There are many prizes, including B&B for four in the City West Hotel for 1st prize. Please show your support.
