Jimmy Bruen Team Fundraiser

Last Sunday saw Strandhill Golf Club host a very special event to raise funds for the Connacht Final winning Jimmy Bruen Team who were due to travel to Carton House to take part in the All-Ireland finals. The competition was open to teams of four of any combination and proved to be very popular. 1st place went to Stephanie Conlon, online Conor McManus, Brona Galvin and Dean McGowan. 2nd place finishers were Robbie Henneberry, Lorna Hill, Maura Butler and Joe Hanney while Ann Carroll, Frank Carroll, Brian Harte and Leo Logan took 3rd place. Strandhill Golf Club and the Jimmy Bruen team would like to thank everyone who took part and made the day such a huge success.

Jimmy Bruen All-Ireland Semi Final

As winners of the 2014 Jimmy Bruen Connacht Shield, Strandhill Golf Club secured a semi final place at Carton House for the All-Ireland semi-finals of this year’s competition. The semi-final was played on Thursday last against Munster Champions, Lisselan of Cork. Lisselan got off to a flying start by going 4 up in the first match while Strandhill led the way in match 2 after 9 holes. Matches 3, 4 and 5 were led by Lisselan at the half way point and they held on to their advantage on the back nine to secure victory by 3 ½ to 1 ½. Waterford beat Strabane in the other semi-final and they came out on top in the final to take this year’s Jimmy Bruen Shield with a victory by 3 ½ to 1 ½ over Lisselan. Well done to all involved in Strandhill Golf Club’s Jimmy Bruen 2014 team on their fantastic success in this year’s event and a big thank you to all who travelled to cheer on the team at all stages of the competition.

Friday Open 18 Hole Stableford

This week’s Friday Open Stableford was a hard fought event that saw the top 16 players returning scores of 36 points or better and it took a fantastic score of 43 points by Kieran Staed to come out on top. Kieran scored 12 pars during his round with 5 on the front nine and an incredible 7 in a row on the back nine to clinch victory. Jim Mulcahy from Rossespoint took second place on 42 points, which on any other day would have been good enough to win. Jim carded 5 pars and a birdie during his round on his way to 42 points. Third place went to Declan Burns of Foyle Golf Club with a score of 41 points.

Hargadon’s Bar 18 Hole Stableford

Saturday’s Hargadon’s Bar 18 Hole Stableford competition was played in glorious sunny conditions and to continue the trend for the week, some fantastic scores were returned. Pat McCaffrey set the standard for the day by scoring a birdie and 8 pars on his way to carding a score of 43 points to take first place. Eugene Gilligan took second spot in a round that included no less than 9 pars on his way to carding a score of 41 points. Martin Farrell took third place with a score of 38 points while Enda Halloran was one point further back with 37 points to secure 4th spot.

Ulster Bank 18 Hole Strokeplay

Sunday’s Ulster Bank sponsored 18 Hole Strokeplay competition was again played in perfect sunny conditions and this was reflected in the standard of golf played on the day with some low scores returned. Fresh from winning his match in Friday’s Jimmy Bruen semi-final, Ciaran Henry continued his good form by shooting a 64 nett to take 1st place. Ciaran recorded 3 birdies and 5 pars on the front nine and added another 3 pars and a birdie on the back nine to sign for round of 64. 2nd spot was claimed by Francis O’Beirne who carded a magnificent score of 66 nett. Francis scored no less than 11 pars over the course of his round, including 9 in a row from the 8th to the 16th holes. Mick Walsh finished two strokes back in 3rd place with a score of 68 nett in a round than was consistent from start to finish.

Gerry Fox took the lowest gross score of the day with a round of 72, scoring 8 pars on the front 9 and 5 on the back 9 and adding 2 birdies on the par 4, 11th and par 3, 14th hole.

Higgins Pharmacy 18 Hole Stableford / Culleenamore Cup

Thursday’s Higgins Pharmacy 18 Hole Stableford competition was another hotly contested affair with Maura Butler taking the top slot with 41 points. Maura’s round included 8 pars on her way to victory. Second place was taken by Brigid Glynn with a score of 39 points. Also on 39 points was third place finisher, Margaret Gerrity who had a similar card to Brigid but lost out on the back 9 score. Gillian Ballantyne rounded out the top four with a score of 36 points.

Cois Na Ri 18 Hole Stableford

Sunday’s Cois Na Ri 18 Hole Stableford competition saw some fantastic golf being played with Mary Corcoran taking 1st place on a score of 42 points. Mary’s round saw her record no less than 7 pars on her way to taking the win. Ann Cox kept up her run of good form of late by taking 2nd place with a score of 40 points in a round that saw her sink 8 par putts including 4 in a row from the 3rd to the 6th holes. 3rd and 4th places could only be separated by a count back with Claire Gallagher taking 3rd ahead of Gillian Ballantyne, who finished 4th as both ladies returned scores of 39 points each.
