Captain's Drive In 2015

Last week’s Captain’s Drive In for 2015 was a massive success and a great day was had by all, here despite the wintry conditions. Captain’s Michael Phelan and Grainne Henneberry would like to thank all the members who turned out in support on the day and also those who sent their best wishes. Special thanks to John Rainey for taking the photos, view to Cyril & Maurice for organising the teams on the morning and to Derek & staff for the very welcome hot buffet in the evening. Celebrations continued into the evening with music by Hughie Lowry.

The winners of this year’s team scramble event were Robert Kelly, Anne McNulty, Padraig Tuffy and Eileen O’Connor. Congratulations to this years winners and thank you to all for taking part.

Men’s News

Sunday 15 Hole Club Stableford

Last Sunday’s 15 Hole Club Stableford Competition was played in contrasting conditions from the previous day’s Captain’s Drive In where gail force winds were the order of the day. Sunday was dry with low winds making for better golfing conditions and this was reflected in the scores that were returned. It was handicap secretary, Joe Tuffy who came out on top on the day with a score of 34 points. Joe’s round consisted of no less than six pars, three on each nine as well as a birdie on the par five fifth hole to make his score of 34 points.

The ever present Francis O’Beirne finished in second place just one point behind Joe on 33 points. Frances was the picture of consistency as he recorded pars on nine out of the fifteen hole played on the day including six-in-a-row from the first to the sixth holes respectively.

Jim Glynn took third place, just one point behind Frances with a score of 32 points. Jim played really well recording no less than seven pars and adding two birdies on the the par five fifth and par three fourteenth holes respectfully.

Congratulations to Frank Keaney who scored a fantastic eagle on the par four, twelfth hole. Well done Frank.

1st Joe Tuffy (14) 34 points
2nd Francis O’Beirne (09) 33 points
3rd Jim Glynn (08) 32 points

Friday Open Stableford

The Friday Open Stableford competitions have been few and far between since the start of the year due to the weather with last Friday’s being only the second one held in 2015. Friday weather however was perfect as there was little or no wind and clear skies which allowed for some good scores to be returned.  Martin Howley took first place with a score of 35 points and was the measure of consistency scoring five pars on his way to signing for his winning score.

Second place was taken by Zbigniew Pikvl who actually won the only other staging of the Friday Open in early January 2015, making it first and second places so far for Fridays. Zbigniew recorded three pars and added two excellent birdies on the par four, third and par four, eighth holes respectfully to sign for his score of 34 points.

1st Martin Howley (19) 35 points
2nd Zbigniew Pikvl (17) 34 points

Saturday 15 Hole Club Stableford

The mild weather of late continued for Saturday and allowed for some outstanding scores to be returned for the competition. First place was taken by Declan Rooney with an outstanding score of 40 points for 15 holes. Just to put Declan’s score into perspective, 40 points would generally be good enough to secure victory in an 18 hole competition let alone a 15 hole one.

Second place was taken by Paul Cox with a score of 35 points while Con Hegarty took third place with a score of 34 points.

1st Declan Rooney (08) 40 points
2nd Paul Cox (03) 35 points
3rd Con Hegarty (17) 34 points

Competition Sponsorship

It’s that time of the year where the men’s competition committee are starting to put together the competition fixtures and sponsors for the coming year. Sponsors play a vital role in the success of competitions at Strandhill Golf Club and without their continued support, we would be unable to offer the quality of competition that we’ve had in years past.

To that end, if there are any members who know of someone or indeed who would be interested in sponsoring a competition themselves at Strandhill Golf Club this year, you can speak to any member of the men’s committee.
