Strandhill Golf Club Notes 16/7/17 – Men’s Branch.

On a very windy day on Strandhill Links the members came out in force to play in Mr Leo Logan’s Presidents Day on Saturday 15th July. Scoring was difficult with the gusting winds in the morning and the drizzly rain in the afternoon. John White took top honours from Gertrude Crummy they both had 39 points with John having the better back nine. John was a very popular winner and he lifted the beautiful Crystal Lamp presented by Leo at the evening festivities. A great night was had by all and this was testament to the popularity of Leo during his presidency.

Congratulations to Dean McGowan who had a hole in one on the 9th hopefully the first of many Dean.

First Tee at Strandhill Golf Club

It was a busy week in Strandhill Golf club this week as the Connacht Sheild team kicked off the week by advancing to the semi-finals with a victory over Carrick-On-Shannon. The two matches that were to be played in Carrick-On-Shannon were postponed due to bad weather but victory in the three matches that were played at Strandhill made rescheduling the two away matches unnecessary. The semi-final will be played this coming Monday, approved September 8th against Tubbercurry Golf Club. Tubbercurry will host three of the matches while the other two will be played at Strandhill so be sure to come along to either venue to show your support.

Thursday saw the contesting of the Swagman Bar sponsored O’Hara Cup 18 Hole Stableford and it proved to be a tightly fought affair with Marie Rooney of Co. Sligo Golf Club coming out the eventual winner with a score of 37 points. Gillian Ballantyne took second spot with a score of 35 points, just ahead of Lady Captain, Ann Cox, who carried her good form from last weeks win to help her take third place with a score of 34 points.

This weeks Friday Open saw some exceptional scores being returned. James Kearins carded a fantastic score of 47 points to finish the clear winner in a round which included no less than 7 pars and a birdie on the par 4, 8th hole. Second and third places could only be seperated by virtue of a count back with Tony Scappaticci from Mountbellew finishing second ahead of Michael O’Hara of Castle Dargan in third place. Both men carded scores of 41 points each which on any other day, would be good enough to be in with a chance of securing first place.

Saturday’s Summerville Nursing Home sponsored 18 Hole Stableford competition saw single figure handicapper, Paul Cox come out on top with a score of 39 points in a round which included 3 birdies and an eagle in the first 5 holes. Joe Tuffy took second spot with a score of 37 points, finishing just ahead of Anthony Skeffington, who was one point back on 36 points.

Sunday’s 18 Hole Ladies Stableford Open competition sponsored by Shoot the Crows Bar followed the trend of Thurday’s competition by being yet another tightly contested battle. Fiona Moylan from Stackstown G.C. secured top spot with consistent scoring to come away with 39 points. Mary Corcoran finished a point back in second place with a score of 38 points while Ann Cox took her second, third place finish of the week with a score of 36 points.

Sunday’s Men’s 18 Hole Stableford competition sponsored by The Glass House Hotel saw a very tight field with 1st and 15th place only seperated by 4 points. The competition was won by Martin O’Hara, who shot a very respectable level par front nine in a round that was good enough to end on a score of 40 points. Martin bogeyed the fourth hole but bounced back immediately with a birdie on the par 5, 5th. There was nothing to seperate second and third places with both Francis O’Beirne and Ciaran Fox returning scores of 39 points. Francis took second place by virtue of a better back 6 holes with Ciaran finishing in third.

On Sunday 14th September 2014, Strandhill Golf Club will host a special fundraiser for our Jimmy Bruen team as they seek the elusive All Ireland Pennant at Cartron House in the National Finals. Its €100 per team of 4 with a maximum of 30 teams.
