Co-existing with Nature and preserving Biodiversity on Our Golf Course
by Jason Kelly, Course Manager
Golf courses are more than just places to perfect your swing; they are vast, open landscapes that hold the potential to coexist harmoniously with nature. At Strandhill Golf Club, we embrace our role as custodians of this unique environment. Nestled alongside a Special Area of Conservation (SAC), we are committed to preserving, protecting, and promoting the habitats that make our course so special.
Our mission is clear ,to lead the way in sustainable golf course management, striving for balance between playability and ecological stewardship. We are Striving for GEO Certification and are proud to announce our journey toward obtaining the prestigious GEO Certified status which is an international standard for sustainability in golf. Achieving this milestone would not only make us the first in Connacht to receive this recognition but would also solidify our commitment to environmental excellence.
Our efforts have already led to significant progress:
Reducing Fertilizer Usage by minimizing chemical inputs, we are fostering fine grasses native to the area, creating a healthier and more resilient course.
Under the guidance of ecologist Alan Lauder, we are launching a comprehensive management program to further enhance the flaura, fauna and ecosystems on our course.
We’ve implemented innovative green practices across our operations to minimize our ecological footprint:
Eco-Friendly Facilities: Installing eco toilets on the course has significantly reduced waste.
Green Energy Initiatives: Photovoltaic (PV) panels, variable pump drives for irrigation, and upgraded building insulation will drastically reduce our water, energy, and heating usage.
Electrifying Our Fleet to an all-electric buggy fleet has reduced emissions while providing a quiet, eco-friendly experience for our members and guests.
Our course is not just a place for sport, it is a haven for biodiversity. Bordering a Special Area of Conservation, we understand the responsibility that comes with managing such a unique site. We remain vigilant in protecting these delicate ecosystems, ensuring they thrive for future generations.
Our commitment to sustainability extends beyond immediate changes; it is a long-term vision for the future. By working with experts and adopting eco-conscious technologies, we aim to set a new standard for golf courses across Ireland and beyond.
At Strandhill Golf Club , every decision we make is guided by the belief that golf and nature can and should co-exist. We invite our members, guests, and the wider community to join us in this journey. Together, we can protect the landscapes we cherish and leave a lasting legacy for the sport and the environment.
